Australia's electricity grid is rapidly shifting to renewables, and according to the Australian government's latest forecast, an increase in household solar power generation will see the share of renewables in main grid electricity generation jump from 23% in 2019 to 69% by 2030. The forecast is 14 percentage points higher than the forecast a year ago.
Australia is the world's second-largest coal exporter, but has also quietly become a powerhouse of renewable energy. Here, a quarter of homes have solar panels on their roofs, more than any other major economy and well above the global average.
The Australian Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources said in a report that there is a higher penetration of renewable energy generation, driven by rooftop solar. And low installation costs and plenty of sunshine make Australia a world leader in rooftop solar panels.
Coal power generation will fall to 11% of total installed capacity by 2030, down from 35% in 2019, the ministry said. Small-scale solar will jump from 13% to 30%, and wind will jump from 10% to 17%. As a result, electricity emissions in 2030 will be 21% lower than last year's forecast.
