In a new report, the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Digital Planning predicts that by the end of the next decade, solar energy will be the country's largest source of electricity.
According to the vision drafted by the Spanish government, by the end of 2030, the cumulative installed photovoltaic power generation in the country may even reach 77 GW. The report also plans a sustainable transition scenario where solar energy will be the cheapest source of electricity in the country by 2030, but with a capacity of 40 terawatt hours and no energy storage systems will be deployed.
However, in this case, renewable energy still accounts for 67% of domestic power generation. The 7 terawatt hours missing in the best case is replaced by coal-fired power (4 terawatt hours). In commenting on the highest penetration rate of solar and renewable energy, the Spanish government said its increase in share will significantly reduce power generation costs, resulting in savings of about 9.6 billion euros.
