From January to May 2024, Sweden experienced 668 hours of negative electricity prices, compared to a total of 310 hours last year. The number of hours with negative electricity prices doubled year-on-year, mainly due to the strong expansion of solar power generation in Europe, a trend that is expected to continue. The increase in negative electricity prices is good for consumers, but in the long run it will affect the investment willingness of power producers. The increase in negative electricity prices in Sweden is directly related to the increase in solar and wind power generation in Europe, especially in Germany. When the sun is shining in Germany and electricity production exceeds demand, it will lead to negative electricity prices, which will affect electricity prices in Sweden.
